Opals

There is a hypothesis that this stone is formed with the help of rain, when water seeps into cracks in the rock. After the water evaporates, the remaining silica dries out, turning into a gemstone.

Opal is one of the few stones that have been found outside of Earth, namely on Mars!

The name opal comes from the Greek Oppalios, which means &"to see a change in color." The ancient Greeks believed that opals were formed from the tears of joy cried by Zeus after his victory over the Titans.

The Romans considered opals to be stones of luck and hope. They were amazed by the fact that the stone can include almost the entire color spectrum, so they gave it the title of the king of stones.

Aboriginal Australians believed opals were the footprints of our creator, as if the stone had touched Earth at the base of the rainbow.

In fact, the play of color in the stone comes from tiny silica spheres. They refract light, creating spectral colors.

Opal was Queen Victoria's favorite gemstone.
