It got its name from its color. Padparadscha in Sanskrit means "sunrise". It is also called "Lotus color".

In the sun, some of the stones get a reddish shimmer. In India they say: &"The stone that, when touched by a lotus flower, makes it bloom, is perfection itself, unattainable even for the gods."&br />

Real Padparadscha is very rare. Pink or orange sapphires are often mistaken for this stone.
